My father, Raj “Akubhai” Patel, is the inspiration behind Raj’s Coffee. Growing up, I watched my father pour his heart into everything he did, whether it was work or hobbies. He taught me the value of hard work, integrity, and the importance of pursuing one’s passions.
Dad has always been a coffee lover. He started a Dunkin’ franchise in the early 1990s in the small city of Easton, Pa. Some of my earliest memories are of him savoring his morning cup, a ritual that seemed almost sacred. His love for coffee was contagious, and it sparked my own interest at a young age. When I started traveling to learn more about coffee, my father was my biggest supporter, always encouraging me to follow my dreams.
His unwavering support and belief in me have been the driving forces behind Raj’s Coffee. It is his passion and dedication that inspire me to maintain the highest standards of quality and sustainability in our coffee. Thank you, Dad, for being my mentor, my cheerleader, and my inspiration.
Hello, I’m Viraj, the founder of Raj’s Coffee. I was surrounded by coffee (and donuts) for as long as I remember. My younger brother and I would often play at Dad’s Dunkin’. Today, it feels nostalgic and comical to reminisce about the two of us as kindergarteners jumping from one stack of donut dough to another, but that’s what happens when you run a family business. Coffee’s always been a part of me, you might even say it runs in my blood. In adulthood, I developed a more refined taste for it, fueled by my many, many long years of graduate school. It was something that Dad and I shared and cherished.
Now, the idea of Raj’s Coffee is born of that nostalgia, care, and compassion that Dad showed to others and others showed to me when he died. In short succession, I’ve experienced health problems, Dad’s death due to COVID-19, and a divorce. My closest friends and family carried me through these trying times. They said, “Hey, let me buy you a cup of coffee, so we can talk. Dump whatever you need to dump… it’s just good friends sharing good coffee.” A good cup of coffee and conversation can heal in profound ways.
In fact, that’s probably what led me to my current work in hospital chaplaincy. I talk to people everyday who are lonely, hurt, depressed, and need someone to listen. As a good friend and colleague told me, “More and better therapy often happens at cafes than therapists’ offices.” That rang true for me. So, Raj’s Coffee is born to bring about more of those moments.
